Larry Eugene Young, 42, died May 21, 2009 in Baghdad, Iraq. He was born April 16, 1967 at Russell, Kansas, the son of Francis L. "Butch" and Roxana (Smith) Young.
Larry grew up and attended schools in Ulysses. While in high school, Larry ran cross-country. He enjoyed working on cars and hunting, and working with computers. He married Velika Ortiz on Dec. 26, 1990 in Panama. To this union were born three sons, Sammy, Larry and Ralph. Larry served as a sergeant E6 in the Special Forces for the United States Army from 1985 to 1998. He spent the last seven years in Iraq working security for Dyna Corp and CTU companies.
Larry married Suzie Ikzar on Sept. 17, 2006 in Baghdad. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Sammy Young of Liberal, Kansas, Larry Young and ralph Young, both of Hutchinson, Kansas, two daughters, Saba and Merriam Young of Baghdad; and his parents, Butch and Roxana Young of Ulysses.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Kimberly Jean Young Howard on Feb. 9, 1999; his grandparents, Jack (Barnsdall High class of '41) and Betty Smith, Ralph and Snowie Young; and one uncle, Charles Smith.
Graveside service will be Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m., at Ethel Reece Cemetery, Barnsdall, with Uncle Jack Smith Jr. of Skiatook officiating. Military rites to be accorded by the Webster Schrack Post 227 of the American Legion.
